Not only does the Sacrament of Penance free us from our sins but it also challenges us to have the same kind of compassion and forgiveness for those who sin against us. We are liberated to be forgivers. We obtain new insight into the words of the Prayer of St. Francis:
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned."
“After his resurrection, Jesus passed on his mission to forgive sins to his ministers, telling them, “As the Father has sent me, even so I send you…Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained”

On January 5, 2023, Pope Francis named Father Michael John Izen, a priest of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, assigning him the titular see of Newport.
Bishop-elect Izen is currently the pastor of the Churches of Saint Michael and Saint Mary in Stillwater, the parochial administrator of the Church of St. Charles in Bayport and the canonical administrator of Saint Croix Catholic school. A native of Fairmont, Minnesota, Bishop-elect Izen, 55, earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics and computer science from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, and upon graduation, went to work for 3M as a systems analyst. During his nine years at 3M, it became clearer that God was calling him to discern a possible vocation to the priesthood, so he enrolled at The Saint Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, earning a Masters of Divinity. Bishop-elect Izen was ordained to the priesthood May 28, 2005, by Archbishop Harry J. Flynn. Fifteen men were ordained to the priesthood that day, one of the largest ordination classes in decades.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:
Town Square Television (the non-profit that broadcasts priest ordinations each May) is looking for volunteers to assist with the production of Bishop-Izen’s ordination, scheduled for April 11 at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. Those who are available that day and have audio mixing or video production experience are encouraged to contact Joe Conlon from Town Square Television (a Knight of Columbus and parishioner from Saint John Neumann in Eagan) at jconlon@townsquare.tv. This is a unique opportunity to participate in an episcopal ordination.
