Sexual misconduct by clergy, church personnel, leaders and volunteers of the church is never acceptable and is contrary to Christian morals, doctrine and Canon Law.  St. Joseph Catholic Community remains committed to preventing abuse and remains vigorous in its efforts to educate in the detection, prevention and reporting of abuse, and to assist victims in healing. VIRTUS training is required for all individuals 18 years and older who assist in
St. Joseph programs involving children.
 

• What is VIRTUS?  VIRTUS is the national brand name that identifies best practices programs designed to help prevent wrongdoing and promote "rightdoing" within religious organizations. The VIRTUS programs empower organizations and people to better control risk and improve the lives of all those who interact with the Church.  VIRTUS educates those who minister to children, youth and vulnerable adults enabling them to recognize the behavior of predators and to know the procedures necessary to insure a safe environment for all concerned, while at church programs held in and outside the church. The Essential 3 (E3) VIRTUS training components required include to:  1) complete the VIRTUS session on Protecting God’s Children,  2)  complete a background check and 3) sign the Code of Conduct.

• Who Needs VIRTUS Training?  Anyone who is employed at the parish, volunteers working with children, youth or vulnerable adults. This includes all staff, youth liturgy coordinators, youth liturgy lector coaches, child care/nursery staff and volunteers, Catechetics/Sunday School teachers/aids/volunteers, Middle and High School Youth Ministers, Stephen’s ministers, and other positions as determined required by the Safe Environment Coordinator.

• How Do I Receive VIRTUS Training?  Register and/or sign in at www.virtusonline.org.  Training consist of a background check and a three hour live session called Protecting God’s Children. The VIRTUS training portal tracks your progress and retains completed certifications.  All training is required to be repeated every three years (training requirements may change due to certain circumstances). Automatic reminders are sent to those who are registered and training is expected to be completed within one week of receiving the notication. • How Do I Know When My Training is Expired?  You will receive an email from VIRTUS.org to inform you that you need to update your training. The St. Joseph Catholic Community Safe Environment Coordinator is responsible to ensure that all personnel maintain current training credentials and can answer any questions that you may have.

• What To Do If I or Someone Else Suspects Abuse at the Church?  If abuse or misconduct is suspected by someone involved in a youth program at church, by church clergy or staff, or if abuse is suspected within a family, call local law enforcement immediately and or contact the Archdiocesan Victim Assistance Hotline (651-291-4475).
